Delgado, Putz, F-Mart and MLBlogs

Mets GM Omar Minaya said today that the Mets will wait until Saturday or Sunday to make a decision on if Carlos Delgado will go on the DL. Acording to MetsblogSI.com‘s Jon Heyman has said on his twitter feed that Carlos Delgado is now feeling better after getting some medical treatment.
Heyman also said that the Mets won’t promote top prospect Fernando Martinez until at least June.
GM Minaya also said that a MRI on J.J. Putz said that he has inflammation in the back of his elbow. Metsblog said that Putz was in a hospital in New York today but he then went to San Fransico for tonight’s game against the Giants. The Mets have not said that he would play or wouldn’t play tonight. …update 6:39 PM: Adam Rubin of the Daily News is saying that Putz will be out for at least 2 days.
Putz has been really struggling after giving up a run last night. Putz has a ERA of 4.05 over the season.

Also on a completely unrelated note I don’t get why MLBlogs is making such a big deal about the June draft. It isn’t that soon and the MLB draft isn’t really that big. 1st round picks sometimes never make it to the majors and late round picks sometimes turn out to be all-stars. It really is very different then it is in the NBA and NFL.

Opinion: Ollie should be Good

While nobody will believe me this is what I think:Perez Lineup

Oliver Perez had a bad outing yesterday. Next start which will be on Wednesday against the Padres, I think he will pitch well. On Mathew Cerone’s, Metsblog he wrote on his twitter feed that he thinks Oliver will do well next start because he did bad yesterday. He said Oliver is a 50, 50 guy so every other outing he will do well.

My thought is that Oliver will pitch somewhere between well enough to win and 8 shutout or 1 run innings. Ollie is a good pitcher. He was 10-7 last year and 15-10 the year before.

When I think of O.P. I think that he is a very good pitcher. Someone that can sometimes go 8 innings. Most people think of him as we will be lucky if he comes out with less then 5 runs. From when he has been a Met he has gone out and pitched quality games. He just throws a few bad outings which makes people think that he is a bad pitcher. I am not saying he is a guy to trust in a game on the line but you can usually trust him to do well enough to win.

If you remember in the World Baseball Classic, Oliver threw only twice in 17 days and one of those outings he threw 85 pitches. That put Oliver behind everyone. Now I would say that his next start would be his last start of the spring or first start of season. He should get better as the season goes on.

Wagner in St. Lucie

I just read on Metsblog that Billy Wagner will be in Port St. Lucie next Tuesday and hopes to throw off a mound. Wagner says that he hopes to be back in late July, early August, while the Mets are saying that he won’t be back before September.

Something tells me that we should trust the Mets on this one. Also if he does come back then the team would have to figure out where to put. Wagner won’t be happy pitching in the 7th inning.

Postgame: Mets 5 at Cards 2

Today the Mets beat the Cardinals 5-2.

W – Bobby Parnell (2-0)
L – Kyle Louch (3-2)
S – Brian Stokes (1)
Johan Santana went only 3 innings but Metsblog says this is normal.
  • Omir Santos hit 2 homers.
  • Daniel Murphy was 0 for 3.
  • In Johan’s 3 innings he gave up 2 hits but both were homers.
  • The bullpen pitched 6 scoreless with a line of:

NY Mets IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA
    Santana 3.0 2 2 2 0 2 2 3.57
    Parnell (W, 2-0) 1.0 1 0 0 1 1 0 2.02
    Dessens (H, 1) 2.0 2 0 0 0 2 0 0.00
    O’Day (H, 2) 1.0 0 0 0 1 1 0 2.77
    Merritt (H, 1) 0.1 1 0 0 0 0 0 4.50
    Stokes (S, 1) 1.2 1 0 0 2 0 0 2.51

Also after the game Jerry Manual said the mets will be throwing the season.

Fifth Starter???

Matthew Cerrone at Metsblog said on his blog:

i think it’s safe to say livan will get the fifth starter’s spot, though he will not immediately travel north with the team, as Adam Rubin of the Daily News has suggested… meanwhile, garcia will be cut, or stay in extended spring training, redding will be the long man, and niese will resume his career at Triple-A where he should be…

I think it could be Niese now. I agree with what to do with Redding and Garcia. I think Livan will be the starter but I think Niese should be the starter.
